Suggested Theme for the 23rd Carnival of Feminists: women & healthcare.
The now ubiquitous Our Bodies Ourselves, first produced in 1970, introduced and asserted the ideas:
- That women, as informed health consumers, are catalysts for social change;
- That women can become their own health experts, particularly through discussing issues of health and sexuality with each other;
- That health consumers have a right to know about controversies surrounding medical practices and about where consensus among medical experts may be forming;
- That women comprise the largest segment of health workers, health consumers, and health decision-makers for their families and communities, but are underrepresented in positions of influence and policy making;
- That a pathology/disease approach to normal life events (birthing, menopause, aging, death) is not an effective way in which to consider health or structure a health system.
How far have we come since the 1970s? Given all of the recent (and on-going!) controversy over women's access to health care and the fervor of the feminist blogosphere on issues such as race & health care, immigration & health care, lgbtq access to queer-friendly health care, illness, access to care and choice, issues of international disparities in health care, the theme of the upcoming 23rd edition of the Carnival of Feminists will focus on women & healthcare.
This is only a suggested theme! As always, this edition of the Carnival of Feminists will also include feminist postings on a wide variety of topics, so please feel free to send me any and all nominations!
Please send your nominations by Monday, 18 September 2006 at midnight! You can use the Blog Carnival submission form or email me at: lingualx AT yahoo DOT com.
