Idiot of the Week: Happy Mother's Day: You're Fat & Ugly

The girl asks: "Why are you going to look different?"

Mom responds: "Not just different, my dear — prettier!"

Ah, folks.  We just haven't had enough idiots of the week lately.  Due out just in time for mother's day:  the new children's book My Beautiful Mommy, by plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer, which explains plastic surgery to children ages 4-7 after their mothers have a "mommy make-over" to "fix" their bodies after childbirth.  Because having the child(ren) isn't enough:   now you have to fix your ugly body before your husband and your kids find you offensive.  What's next?  Mother's Day gift certificates for plastic surgery?  Ugh.  Just.  Don't.  Answer.  That.  I don't want to know.

I particularly like the illustration of mommy's new, "magic" body, with all of the sparkles.  Wow!  She's pretty!

And, if you're not offended enough, here are just a few "mommy makeover" sites!  Yay!

Eliot's Headless Whores: The American Male Politician and Remedial Feminism

Sigh.  Call him the idiot of the week:  Eliot Spitzer.

Of course we've all spent a lot of time this week thinking about Eliot Spitzer's amazing acts of hubris;  perhaps the temporary definition of "hypocrisy" in Wikipedia might include a picture of Governor Spitzer as the word embodied?

In a few short days, he and his wife went from this:
    (photo via 02138 )

    Winter_07

    to this:
    (photo via nj.com)

Large_clothes1There's a lot of fodder for discussion in the Spitzer case:  the amazing rise and fall of a visionary leader; debates over the illegality of prostitution, here, here, here, here & here;  the mirth (and sadly bad frat boy ways) of the Wall Street boys (yes, I did knowingly link to the NY Post...); the ways in which the public reacted bizarrely to the news by attacking Spitzer's wife (More disgusting Dr. Laura coverage here;  see also Body Impolitic's response, and mine!); all of this and more will continue to be debated in the blogosphere over the coming weeks.

For me, however, what stands out is the interminable stupidity and unconscious misogyny of the American male politician.  In education--and in our legislation of things like No Child Left Behind & standardized testing--our political, social, and cultural mores have determined that there are essential skills necessary for participation in society.  A well educated citizen is articulate in basic, shared knowledge like math, literature, writing, science, civics, and history (to name a few).  I'd like to suggest that the repeated incidents of public infidelity on the part of the American male politician argue for something even more basic:  mandatory courses in remedial feminism.  To truly move to a society where men and women are considered equal, gender equality needs to be a central tenant of social, political, cultural, and academic discourse.

In an election cycle that explicitly condones sexism against a female candidate for president, in the midst of a legislative war over reproductive rights,  in the continuing ideological fight for access to birth control & abortion, in the hypocrisy of a culture that mandates motherhood but refuses to fund and legislate access to quality daycare and schools, just to name a few issues, is it any surprise that one of the leading liberal politicians is busted for participation in a prostitution ring?

That Mr. Spitzer went to a prostitute isn't shocking.  In some ways, the only thing newsworthy here is his own vulgar hypocrisy.  But, what really bothers me is this:  if Mr. Spitzer could buy--literally--into the notion that some women are commodities to be bought for his pleasure, how is it that he could represent and advocate for public policies that ensure the equality of men and women under the law?  In New York, Spitzer was a known proponent of progressive legislation for women's rights.  Amy Goodman has a great article about it here (and about how, as the news of Spitzer's infidelity was breaking, New York's women & teens were rallying for new legislation that Spitzer supported).

What I'm trying to get at is this:  the very public picture of Mr. Spitzer and his wife, above, sends one message about equality in our society:  men and women working together to effect social and political change (of course, he as the legislator, she as the trusty "support" network).  Mr. Spitzer's political career was defined, in one arena, by a fierce passion for women's rights.  And below, a darker, more chilling picture of Mr. Spitzer's conscious? unconscious? opinion of women.  Call them Eliot's Headless Whores.

Here is what the Emperor's Club promised its clients (via Huffington Post--the EC Website has been taken off-line):

Emperors' Club vip is the most preferred international social introduction service for those accustomed to excellence. Introducing the most impressive models to leading gentleman of the world is our expertise. We act for a select group of educated, refined and successful international clients who give their best in all they do and who, in return, only wish to receive the best. Catering to clients who will not compromise in any area of their life...

Our meticulous standards of beauty, intelligence and charm ensure that you always encounter the quality you've come to expect in a woman, when with an Emperors' Club vip model. Each of our companions is a product of an exceptionally fine background and a success in her right. All rendezvous are individually crafted to suit the needs of your specific occasion. Our goal is to make life more peaceful, balanced, beautiful and meaningful. We honor commitment to our clients as we covet long-term relationships of trust and mutual benefit. Experience for yourself a service of obvious distinction...

We are a visual culture--one which understands, interprets, and argues, based on images.  Images say everything.  So, how disturbing is it that each of these "companions," who boast "intelligence," "charm," and "success" is pictured headless?  Now, before you jump to the immediate argument--of course their faces are not depicted for legal reasons.  And yet:  they are headless.  They are not, say, shot from behind without faces shown.  They are not (with one exception) shot with their hair covering their faces.  They are, in fact, headless.

They are rated, by diamonds.  They are body parts to be used for pleasure--breasts, legs, and torsos (oh yeah--and the implied vagina).  They are not "perfect preference," but headless whores.  Were Mr. Spitzer actually interested in "success" and "intelligence" and "charm" (not to mention support and the propagation of his legacy), why would he need to look further than his wife & partner?

So, in that headlessness is revealed a vast misogyny that views women as nothing more than the fuckable object--a 'ho with holes.  Here we have women to be used and discarded--not really that different than buying a box of tissues:  buy them, use them for your bodily fluids, and throw them away when you're done.

Here we have women as the ultimate act of capitalism:  an object to be bought & sold.

    Maya_2
Here's the thing:  if Mr. Spitzer were actually committed equality and a fierce advocate for equal rights, then he should have been repulsed by these images, a clearly disgusting portrayal of women as sex objects.  Let's face it:  we're a country fairly immune to rhetoric.  Despite the Emperor Club's discussions of "introductions" and "models" and "successful women," we all know the site is selling these women.  And Eliot Spitzer was buying--to the possible tune of $80,000.  For the moment, I'd like to belay the inevitable debate over what it means to work as a high-priced "companion" and whether or not the ability to set one's own price and working conditions is, in fact, an act of feminism, as some have argued.  That is a rich topic ripe for debate.  What I want to remain focused on here is Mr. Spitzer's remedial understanding of a woman as a headless, fuckable object.

So, the question is a philosophical one:  how can a politician truly understand and argue for gender equality when accepting the most primitive of social norms where women are concerned?  At least conservative religious leaders who would bar women from public office have their ideology aligned with their practice.  When you look at the incredible spate of male politicians engaging in illegal (or unwise) trysts, the hypocrisy points to the basic fact:  do they really believe that men and women are equal?  If not, how can they govern and legislate in a way that represents us all?  As a culture, I don't think we're truly ready to wrestle with the embedded sexism that lies deep within our cultural psyche--we can't even address & universally critique blatant acts of sexism.

Here's my final point:  none of this is news to feminists.  This is the basic stuff of feminism for years and years and years.  From conferences to websites to courses in college to  blog posts (see this great one on the male gaze at Feminism 101) to books like  Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, Susan Bordo's Unbearable Weight, Joan Jacobs Bromberg's The Body Project, and Janet Price's Feminist Theory and the Body, this is all the stuff of basic feminism.  And yet, despite all of this canonical & contemporary work, the basic message is still adrift in our culture.  Mr. Spitzer, champion of women's rights, father to three daughters 13, 15, & 17, husband to a Harvard lawyer and "partner" in his career, is revealed as a hypocrite in his own ideology.  Women as equals?  Good for the political sphere & rhetorical flourish.  Not so good for the bedroom.

    **********

P.S.  On women politicians, sexual trysts, and equality:  I'm not saying that women politicians can't make the same mistake.  I'm not saying women might not commit an act of infidelity.  I'm just saying the temptation & the ideology aren't quite the same.  When was the last time you saw advertisements for a Headless Man Whore site?  I'm just saying...

Idiot of the Week: Sally Kern

Ah, ah, ah.  Nothing gets my blood flowing like a good homophobe story.

People:  here is the question of the week:  what the hell are people in the good state of Oklahoma drinking?  Seriously:  what's in their water?  (Hint:  Tom Coburn is from Oklahoma.)

Here at Lingual Tremors, we'd like to introduce you to our inconsistent segment, the "Idiot of the Week."  For your consideration:  Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern.  What makes Representative Kern so special is her diatribe about homosexuality and the way in which it is signaling a "death knell" for this country.  Apparently this is the stuff of public events for Ms. Kern.   Because, you know, elected public officials are all excellent and well-trained theologians.

    Sallykerngodhatesyou

"Not everyone's lifestyle is equal, just like not everyone's religion is equal."  I'm just wondering--whose religion does she think is better?

"I'm not gay bashing, but according to God's word, that is not the right kind of lifestyle."  What Bible is she reading?

"I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat."  Well, I guess we can revoke all of the public financing for the war in Iraq, since homosexuality is a bigger threat than terrorism... I think the superiority of a particular religion is also implied here...

"They are going after two year olds."  What two year old goes to school?

"One of my colleagues said We don’t have a gay problem in our community… well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer in your little toe, do you just say that I’m going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation."  Being gay is like giving the country cancer.  Is this woman kidding?

Said diatribe was at a public event about campaign financing.  Specifically:  it was about campaign financing for a gay candidate running for a state office in Oklahoma (see below).  What's even more frightening?  Before she was in the legislature, this woman's chosen profession was teaching.  Would you want this woman teaching your children and warping their minds?  Do you want her making decisions about your government?  Any government?

When given a chance to explain her comments, Representative Kern said this (via Pam's House Blend):

The account given on YouTube took my words out of context and omitted other parts stringing certain words together to make it appear I was engaging in hate speech.  I was not and would never do such a thing. The YouTube account is a blatant misrepresentation of my talk.

As an American, you and I, and everyone else has the right to express our opinion.  I said nothing that wasn't true.  The homosexual agenda is real, the movement is aggressive, and it is a very real threat to the sacred institution of marriage and the traditional family unit.  They are actively seeking to remove conservatives from the political arena.  My talk was to a Republican group and I was speaking about the homosexual agenda to defeat conservative Republicans.  They want to silence anyone who does not approve their lifestyle.  They want their freedom but don't want those who disagree to have their freedom.

Read that carefully:  the account on YouTube "is a blatant misrepresentation of my talk" in which Rep. Kern asserts "I said nothing that wasn't true.  The homosexual agenda is real, the movement is aggressive, and it is a very real threat to the sacred institution of marriage and the traditional family unit."  [Grammar Girl moment:  so, does "nothing that wasn't true" mean that now, in the present, it is true?]  So, even when defending herself, she upholds her hate speech.

I encourage you to write to our good friend Sally and let her know what you think:  sallykern@okhouse.gov.  I think it's important for Sally to know that her kind of vitriolic hatred & stupidity is what's wrong with the United States.  While you're at it, you might like to make a contribution to the good folks at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, who made the YouTube video you just watched.  (I think this kind of immediate reaction is fantastic--it's a great video and gets the point across very well)  It's their job to get lgbtq folks & lgbtq allies elected to public office and to give homophobes like Sally the pink slip.   Let's make her "ex-representative" Kern.

Since 1991, the Victory Fund and its national donor network have helped hundreds of openly LGBT candidates win election to local, state and federal offices.

Idiots of the Week: State of Missouri, Authors of H.B. 1625

Birth Control pills do not cause abortions.
Plan B does not cause abortions.
Plan B is not the same thing as RU 486, which does induce an abortion.

However, the great state of Missouri is considering new legislation, H.B. 1625 that would give pharmacists the right not to fill prescriptions based on "conscience"; equates Plan B with RU-486; and essentially argues that access to birth control pills is not a woman's right, but a pharmacist's right to determine who should receive them.

This just frosts my gizzard.  When can we get back to dealing with medical issues in a sane, medically & scientifically based way?

    Grrrr....

Read Missouri NARAL's analysis of the bill here.
Read Feministing's take here.  And, for really cheerful news, read the comment thread, which starts off with a discussion of "what is an abortion?"

    From Feministing:

Sumners suggests contacting Representative Robert Wayne Cooper, the Health Care Policy committee chair and a doctor (so he should know better).  Urge him to support sound science and women's legal right to birth control access.

Huckabee: Your Man for God's Standards... & Lingual Tremor's "Idiot of the Week"

Oh, do go to The Daily Kos for this rewrite of the Constitution.  You know, written according to "God's Standards."  Disturbing.  Disturbing.  Disturbing.

So, are we rewriting the Constitution in Greek?  Aramaic?  Hebrew?  Talk about No Child Left Behind.  The U.S. will need a major curricular rewrite...

Best Use of U.S. Taxpayer Money EVER: The Gay Bomb

It's time for everyone's favorite LT Category:  Idiot of the Week.  Today I bring you:  Wright Laboratory. Homosexuality and the military have a long (if often silent) history;  it's not as if the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the Clinton era is actually anything new.  However, in the "are you kidding me" category comes this great news item.  The U.S. military in its infinite wisdom spent serious time investigating the possibility of creating "a gay bomb."  The U.S. Airforce asked for $7.5 million dollars to build it.  This is not an "April Fools Day" news item.  Sigh.  It's all too real.  From the BBC:

The US military investigated building a "gay bomb", which would make enemy soldiers "sexually irresistible" to each other, government papers say.

You can read the entire proposal, available through the freedom of information act at The Sunshine Project here.  The proposal is pretty hilarious.  It's entitled "Harassing, Annoying and Bad Guy Identifying Chemicals." The gay bomb is category 3, "Chemicals that effect human behavior."  The proposal says "One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused 'homosexual behavior.'  Please note:  they had absolutely no evidence that they could actually make this happen--it's all couched in quasi-scientific language.  What surprised me is that the proposal didn't just get tossed out.  There are no references to other studies, to peer reviewed scientfic journals, it's just a bunch of "trying to be science" babble. Homosexuality gets linked to other bomb projects that sting and make people smell bad.  This has got to be r & d at its absolute best.  This reads like some 3rd grade kids sitting in a tree house trying to figure out how to annoy the other kids in the neighborhood.  The Pentagon didn't fund it, but it's pretty scary that this was even considered.

Idiot of the Week: John McCain is NOT FUNNY.

Get me some damned Zoloft now, because I am NOT going to make it through the campaign season without having a heart attack. Did you hear about John McCain's campaign stop "humor"?

Republican presidential contender John McCain, known for having a quirky sense of humor, joked about bombing Iran at a campaign appearance this week. In response to an audience question about military action against Iran, the Arizona senator briefly sang the chorus of the surf-rocker classic “Barbara Ann.” “That old, eh, that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran,” he said in jest Wednesday, chuckling with the crowd. Then, he softly sang to the melody: “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, anyway, ah ...” The audience responded with more laughter. His quip was prompted by a man in the audience who asked: “How many times do we have to prove that these people are blowing up people now, nevermind if they get a nuclear weapon, when do we send 'em an airmail message to Tehran?”

And he wants to be President of the United States? Are you kidding me? SCHMUCK. The Beach Boys should sue the idiot.  Here is the original.  In case you really need to HEAR the SCHMUCK.

Idiot of the Week: Peter Pace

Thankfully, for every fucktard like Peter Pace, there are amazing people like Tom Toles who are willing to clearly illustrate blatent idiocy.  Tt070315

    The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

US General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Chicago Tribune that he supports the Pentagon's ban on gays serving openly in the military because homosexual acts are "immoral".

He also likened homosexuality to adultery.

"I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts," Pace said. "I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way."

Thanks for modeling moral behavior for us, Peter Pace.  You're the idiot of the week.  Hat tip to Bean for the Tom Toles cartoon..

Idiot of the Week: Dr. Gary Merrill

Ah yes, it's time for that Lingual Tremors' favorite:  Idiot of the Week. Today, I offer you Dr. Gary Merrill, prejudicial physician.

Look.  Here's what I don't need:  my doctor as judge.  And, it's not what you think (it's non-abortion medical post!).  In the latest case of medical ideology:  your doctor as judge and priest, a "Christian" pediatrician in Bakersfield, California, refused to treat a toddler with an ear infection because her mother had tattoos.  Did you get that?  If you have a tattoo, you don't get medical treatment.  Here's a sound byte from KGET, a local television station:

The doctor said he is just following his beliefs, creating a Christian atmosphere for his patients.

    Tasha Childress said it’s discrimination.

She said Dr. Gary Merrill wouldn’t treat her daughter for an ear infection because Tasha, the mother, has tattoos.

The writing is on the wall—literally: “This is a private office. Appearance and behavior standards apply.”

For Dr. Gary Merrill of Christian Medical Services, that means no tattoos, body piercings, and a host of other requirements—all standards Merrill has set based upon his Christian faith.

And the AMA is backing him up.  Doctors, they say, have the right to refuse service to anyone.  Smack of discrimination anyone?  Of course, I don't really want to be treated by a doctor who has some sort of prejudice against me. (And the very title "Christian Medical Services" creeps me out, even though I am a practicing Christian.  In this case, "Christian" means creepy Promise-keeper religious style oppression using bad Biblical interpretation to beat "others" into submission.)

However, I think this is an interesting brewing conflict in American culture.  Academia, for example, is constantly getting attacked for "ideology" in the classroom.  What if a left-wing doctor refused to treat David Horowitz because the physician disagreed with Horowitz's politics?  I would argue, with all due deference to my profession, that medical attention is a little more important than your average Spanish or History class.  So, if faculty have to curb their bias in the classroom, why do doctors get to practice blatant discrimination?

For the record:  there is no legitimate Biblical argument for refusing to treat someone with tattoos.  Oh, only Merrill wasn't asked to treat the mother with tattoos.  It was the BABY, who DIDN'T HAVE ANY tattoos.  Okay, I'm not even going there except to say, this happened in the state that wants to bring heightened and sensitive awareness to child-rearing.  This state has brought you a proposed "anti-spanking" law.  So, you can't spank your kid because that's child abuse.  But denying a baby medical care?  Well, that's just physician's "right of conscience."

Idiot of the Week: Gwinnett County

'Cause you just can't get enough dumb:  Gwinett County features not one, but TWO lovely moments of idiocy:

    1. Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

    2.  In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

    Boob-Gate 2006

Filed under the "Are You Kidding Me?" category.  Breasts:  even feminists have them...

Illu_breast_anatomySo yesterday, Ann Althouse posted a lovely little piece called "Let's take a closer look at those breasts" about a photograph taken of liberal bloggers at a luncheon with Bill Clinton.  The breasts in question belong to Jessica of Feministing.com.  In what has to be the most ridiculous and trashy posting of the year, Althouse questions whether or not Jessica is a feminist because of the way she looks in the picture.  Or, more specifically, the way her breasts look.  Come on.  Jessica has done more for feminism than most blogs in the blogosphere.  Feministing, under her leadership is a fantastic site and a fantastic resource.  This is just ridiculous.  What?  We're all supposed to chop off our breasts now to prove that we're more feminist-than-thou?  Save the trash and let's get back to the real issues.

    Idiot of the Week! Vader-Cheney

Oh come on.  Yesterday, in an interview with John King, Dick Cheney enjoyed the comparison to Darth Vader.  Yeah.  'cause everyone should WANT to be Vader.  I found this via Bring it On.  The original is up at CNN.  Dickie says:

We are now engaged in a constant effort, obviously, to protect the nation against further attack. That means we need good intelligence, it means there have to be national security secrets. It means we need to be able to go after and capture or kill those people who are trying to kill Americans. That's not a pleasant business. It's a very serious business. And I suppose sometimes people look at my demeanor and say, well, he's the Darth Vader of the administration.

This is What a "Utopia" Looks Like?

Okay, I get it!  I know that I need to get a new analogy, but we've all read The Handmaid's Tale, right?  We've all seen The Stepford Wives, right?  We've all read Octavia Butler, right?  We all know what futuristic dystopias hold for women, right?  Well, this time, let's call it "Dystopic Pizza."

Yummmmmyyyyyyy.... it's that late night craving for blue and red and white (hmmm... you don't think they actually meant to make Domino's colors RED, WHITE, and BLUE, do you?).  And, you call Domino's.  Why?  Because they deliver at crazy hours when other pizza places don't, because maybe it's the only pizza place in your town, or because it just tastes yummy when you have a hankering for junk food...
    Dominospizza
I don't care how good it tastes, dammit!  BOYCOTT DOMINO'S PIZZA!

Mark Oliver, via The Guardian's news blog, offers an update (3/1/2006) on "Pizza Pope" Tom Monaghan's dream for a U.S. town run entirely on Catholic principles.  Because what's a little thing like separation of church and state when you've got the luxury of gated communities?

Well, here's the plan for Ave Maria (via Oliver):
"The idea is to create a community for 35,000 people - including 5,000 students at a new university - in which, for example, cable television is controlled so there is no pornography, and there are no places where an abortion can be carried out."

The ground-breaking was last month in... you guessed it...Florida!  Because if it wasn't Texas, it had to be Florida!  So, after your trip to The Holy Land Experience in Orlando, where even the Bible is translated, Disney-style, then you can jet on over to Naples for a little Vatican, U.S. style...

And, how do you suppose this university will define academic freedom?  My guess is:  C-E-N-S-O-R-S-H-I-P...

    No Sex for You!

Via Bush vs. Pro Choice Action Center comes today's "Handmaiden News" (Original Article in Kansas City News).  Now, girls under 16 won't have to worry about losing their right to have an abortion or getting abstinence only education in schools because Kansas wants to make sex itself illegal!

The lawsuit filed by The Center for Reproductive Rights, a New York advocacy group, stems from a 2003 opinion issued by Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline's opinion requiring health care providers and others to tell authorities about consensual sex by underage youths.

The group contends that forced reporting discourages adolescents from seeking counseling and medical treatment and violates their rights to informational privacy.

The Attorney General's Office contends the statute requires mandatory reporting because sex is inherently harmful to underage children. In Kansas, the age of consent is 16.

Fortunately, Federal Judge Marten stopped the "hoo hah" and ruled against Kansas City Attorney General Phill Kline:

A federal judge hearing a constitutional challenge to a Kansas law requiring doctors, teachers and others to report underage sex between consenting youths said the state presented no credible evidence that underage sex is always harmful.

U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten stopped short of issuing a decision from the bench, but he repeatedly interrupted Thursday's closing arguments by Assistant Attorney General Steve Alexander to challenge his assertions.

"Motives are irrelevant - I want to deal with facts," Marten said. "Where is the clear, credible evidence that underage sex is always injurious? If you tell me because it is illegal - I reject that," Marten said.

Maybe Phill Kline should take a page from Mumbai's morality police:

Nightlife in India's entertainment capital has become deadly dull, youngsters in Mumbai complain, as the authorities continue a crackdown on discos and bars that they accuse of corrupting impressionable young minds.

Fazal Bacchus: Idiot of the Week Award!

In this month's Wired (October 2005) Fazal Bacchus, vice-president of Spring Nextel (sigh, yes, my cell provider) suggested that in order to better our U.S. cell service, people should stop complaining about putting cell sites up in their neighborhoods.  He says, "One thing people can do to improve call reception is lobby to get laws changed to make it easier for carriers to build cell sites."  Yeah.  We have way too many trees and way too much nature.  Let's build MORE cell towers.

    Hugo Chavez: Going After Robertson

Following up on last week's "Idiot of the Week" award, the BBC reported that Hugo Chavez is taking legal action against Pat Robertson:

"I announce that my government is going to take legal action in the United States... to call for the assassination of a head of state is an act of terrorism," Mr Chavez said in a televised speech.

"If the US government does not take action that it must take, we will go to the United Nations and the Organization of American States to denounce the US government," Mr Chavez said.

Mr Chavez, who has frequently charged that the US are plotting to kill him, said Mr Robertson was "crazy" and "a public menace".

Pat Robertson is, and has always been, part of the radical right wing.  I think it's interesting that Chavez is calling the U.S. out on its own terms, seeking to hold Robertson responsible in an era of global vigilence.

    Pat Robertson: Inappropriate?

And today's Idiot of the Week Award goes to Pat Robertson.  It's been a while since Robertson, now 75, has been in the news.  But, undoubtedly anxious for a little attention, Robertson suggested that the American government should "assassinate" Hugo Chavez.

The U.S. government called Robertson's comments "inappropriate."  Inappropriate?  Do I really need to ask what would happen if some foreign cultural/social/political/religious leader suggested a similar action against a U.S. government official?  You've got to be kidding me!

Dear George: You're the Idiot of the Week!

    Dearest George, (I mean)

Dear Idiot of the Week Winner:

Wow!  Thanks for vetoing EC today.  I am so glad that I have an excellent patriarchal leader like you to look out for my interests.  My uterus thanks you too.  I know that I am definitely too stupid to think for myself.  Can I call you daddy?

Since I work in the public sector, George, I was wondering, pretty please, could you throw in a dental plan?  Because somehow I think that baby x and baby y are going to need some good dental care from being parked in front of the t.v. watching "I Want to Be A Hilton" and other excellent educational programming while eating candy and drinking soda.  Let's face it:  Mommy X and Daddy Y can't afford daycare in New York, our future kids will have to be raised by Big Brother's excellent televised adventures  (Come on George, you know you've been such an absolute peach about benefits for those of us who work for the city and the state).

It's a good thing you already decided not to run for governor again.  I'm just writing to send you some little farewell kisses.  You can forget running for the presidency because all of the New York feminists promise that we will pull out every crappy thing you've done to women, minorities, and the poor since you became governor of New York & we'll use it against you in the campaign.

    Love,

You Can't Get Birth Control Either...

Scarleteen has an important post on the "Parent Right to Know" Act:

Young women may soon have to wait five days or more before obtaining contraceptives, so that their parents can be notified. On Tuesday, a bill known as the "Parents Right to Know Act" was introduced in both the US Senate and House of Representatives (S 1279, HR 3011). This legislation would require clinics receiving federal funds under Title X to notify the parents of any minors who seek contraception at least five days before writing a prescription. It does not demand parental consent, but allows no exceptions to the notification requirement.

And guess who sponsored this legislation?  Lingual Tremor's 29 June 2005 "Idiot of the Week," Senator Tom Coburn.  So, for fun, let's nominate him again for the second "Idiot of the Week" award!

    Scarleteen writes:

The message here isn't murky: young women don't deserve the right to control their fertility.

Better they become pregnant when unwanted or unprepared (even when the sex is rape or otherwise nonconsensual -- something which is the case for as many as 1/3rd of all women during their lives, something continually ignored in policy about BC and EC) than to only become pregnant when they choose to.

    Action Steps:

Give Tom's D.C. office a call and let him know what you think about the patriarchy controlling our sexuality, yet again:  202.224.5754

    I'm a Broken Record: USE A CONDOM!

In what has to be chalked up to today's "you've got to be kidding me" news, Republican Senator Tom Coburn wins the IDIOT OF THE WEEK award.

So here I am, whiling my summer days away in the library writing about HIV/AIDS and Coburn is holding up Lester Crawford's nomination as commissioner of the FDA because he wants condom packages relabeled to expose their "ineffectiveness" to STDs.

Now, people, it won't shock you to find out that I'm not flagellating myself in a closet as the last American virgin with impure thoughts.  Instead, I'm a healthy, sexually active 30 something.  So, let me be the first to ask you:  Have you seen a condom package lately?  It doesn't promise life, love, happiness and freedom from all diseases.  It doesn't say "use this and you're home free, baby!  Woo hoo!"  What it does do is suggest that you'll be just a smidge safer if you're using a barrier than, say, doing the naked nasty with Mr. Charming from the bar last night.

Can we PLEASE circulate actual, factual information in this country?   HIV/AIDS rates are RISING in the U.S. and it's due, in part, to the U.S. government's irresponsibility in promoting false information and deadly choices like "abstinence."  We've gone from a government that responsibly took the lead in HIV prevention--albeit long into the epidemic--to a government that forces schools to teach abstinence only sex ed and encourages the rewriting of textbooks to support that position, that removes accurate information about condoms from the CDC website, that has withdrawn federal funding for programming that's not abstinence based, and that proposes people like Jerry Thacker to head up the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.  I feel like I'm living in a big novel and you never know where the next fictional moment will emerge.

I'm a broken record here:  we don't have a cure for HIV, but we do know how to effectively enact prevention in this country.  We have a proven track record of prevention and maintenance.  And, that record is going down hill rapidly.  I wonder what Canadian condoms say...

    Action Steps:

Give Tom's D.C. office a call and let him know what you think about new condom labels:  202.224.5754
