Looking for clues

I ran this search on Google Trends, thought it was interesting:

Google sez:

Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results -- our search-volume graph -- plotted on a linear scale.

All I know for sure is that I was running a "cat vomit" and "cat vomiting" searches back in February when Marmalade started to get sick.  If you look at the graph, there was not enough search volume on the term "cat vomiting" until about September for it to register, with a quick spike up at the end of the year, while "cat vomit" shoots up from nothing to halfway up the graph in a vertical line at the very beginning of the year.  I read - somewhere - that some pets started to get sick as early as December. The original recall was for items produced between December 3rd and March 6th.

I guess I wasn't the only one turning to Google to find answers. 

It's late and I'm tired because I have not been sleeping well so I haven't done all my homework on this, but I thought I'd put it out there.

Batwa People of Eastern Congo

The Batwa people were traditionally hunter-gatherers.  In Eastern Congo, they lived off what the forest provided, until prolonged warfare and the creation of national parks ended their way of life.  Neglected by the government, shunned by other ethnic groups, the Batwa live on the margins of Congolese society.  They have no knowledge of agriculture or animal husbandry.  They have never participated in a cash economy.  They live in temporary villages in constant fear of being driven out by real estate developers or the government.  They build their houses out of sticks and leaves and die of things like too much rain.  There are about 3,000 living in the area around Goma.  They want dignity, they want a way to live as others live, but how?  No one can simply give that to them.

In August, I met an American girl in Kigali with a friend named Morgan, a student at the Université de Goma.  On a whim, I went to eastern Congo, ostensibly to climb a volcano and see some gorillas, all  because Morgan knew a guy who knew a guy who could get me a good rate. Morgan also happened to be one of the most extraordinary individuals I've ever met--a law student, an eldest son, the founder of his own NGO, and a good guy to have around the next time Mt. Nyiragongo erupts--and so on a second whim, I made a promise I intend to keep to Morgan and 3,000+ people. Needless to say, I never did get to see the gorillas.  
In a series of posts, learn about the Batwa, the support Morgan's NGO needs to help them, and how I hope to mobilize that support while avoiding all those pitfalls of aid I love to critique, but to which I can offer no easy solutions.

Politics in the Classroom? How Could It Be?

So, as some of you know, I dabble in academia when I'm not leading a fabulously feminist existence on the web. (I know, I know--a job? How utterly capitalistic of me...). Since many of you who follow this blog are also academics, I thought you might be interested in the following new report. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has just released a ground-breaking report on "Freedom in the Classroom." In response to many of the recent, high profile attacks on academia by the likes of David Horowitz, and several state legislatures' "Academic Bill of Rights," this report really engages critics of academia and answers the question: why academic freedom? It's well worth a careful read. And, if you are at a college or university, it's well worth passing around and engaging both your faculty and your administration in a conversation about the report. We can't presume the legacy of academic freedom--we have to fight to protect it and the exigencies of free speech. So, please do your homework! Click here. Fruit Raids and Simon Says

Regular readers of this blog know that I am addicted to Weekend Edition. Listening to 2 hours of news on Saturdays & Sundays is what, for other folks, the New York Times Sunday edition is. I love the depth of the commentary and the way that program has guided many of my adult decisions about politics and the way I view the world (and also, the way I disagree with the world, and with NPR...). This morning, Scott Simon offered one of the most thoughtful and interesting commentaries I've heard about Senator Larry Craig and the incident leading to his arrest this summer. Simon talks about the people who have been crowing about Craig's arrest (rejoicing in his "getting his" and pointing out the hypocrisy of Craig's public and private acts). Among the many interesting things Simon says is the fact that the whole incident reminded him of an earlier era when police regularly went on "fruit raids" to arrest men engaged in sex in public places. As Simon considers the very nature of a police state and the ways in which policing sex is a dangerous precedent, he points out that Craig wasn't engaged in a sexual act, only in determining interest between 2 consenting adults. Scott Simon's thoughtful commentary really hammered home something I've been wrestling with--why, in 2007, are police in Minnesota setting up traps for gay men in public bathrooms? I really appreciated Simon's careful reflections on the case and the ways in which he questions both the arrest (and the conservative agenda it revealed) and the public outcry (and the liberal inability for compassion it revealed). I also appreciated the way Simon reminded his listeners that Senator Craig's sexuality--and whatever he may or may not be struggling with--is none of our business.
