I was saying that many people fail to meet the ideal of love Alice was describing. There is a belief that romantic love or attachment love is the fullest expression of who people are - so much so that the word "relationship" itself has come to be synonymous with a romantic one. But my impression, from various relationships I've observed, is that love is often quite narrowly conceived, and very far from a full expression of who someone is. It can actually be much more limiting than other kinds of relationships. I was talking about infatuation and self-destructive impulses and so on. But it may be even simpler than that. After all, we recognize that people have a "type" - and what that amounts to, usually, is trying to make someone else fit your pre-conceived notion of what he or she should be, trying to stuff the person into an existing niche in your heart. Not everyone does this, of course, but it's common enough that you can probably think of a dozen of examples of this, in your acquaintance. I know I can. Right now I'm thinking of a friend of a friend, who is a composer, who seems to have a Diva fixation - he only dates large blonde sopranos.
Now, it's possible that you can lead a long, happy life with your large blonde soprano - that it either doesn't matter that that's the main reason you were drawn to her, or initially she's just your type but you eventually get past this and come to love her for many other reasons as well - but it's also possible that your attraction to her is oddly impersonal, that she may not fit your set notions of what she should be like, and you get frustrated with her deviations from your dream.
There are actually two problems here, or two parts to the same problem. I see it structurally. On the one hand, the foundation of this love-construct is too narrow, it's resting on this somewhat flimsy support and it's hard for it to bear a lot of weight. And then the other problem is that you pile on the weight, because that's what people are supposed to do when they are in love. They spend all their time together, depend on one another, and look to each other to provide everything - they retreat from other people in their lives, and come to rely on one another almost exclusively. That, it seems to me, puts a lot of pressure on this not terribly strong foundation. It doesn't seem surprising to me that the support often gives way.
Alice was suggesting that you look to change - or broaden? - the basis on which you are attracted to someone else. My own opinion is that this is very hard to do. Not impossible, but hard. My thought is that it might be easier to try to lift some of the weight off, by having more people in your life, more people you look to for comfort or understanding or some of those other "needs" therapists are fond of talking about. Of course, you can try to do both at the same time.
